Daz’s Hot Tips: Philippines Edition

  1. Avoid the cities. Most people will tell you Manilla isn’t very safe, my vibe from our brief time in Cebu is that it is also best used as a brief stop over. The islands  (there are thousands of them) are unique and beautiful.
  2. Carry cash. There are very few ATMs (if any) on some of the islands. If visiting anywhere outside the main towns or beaches in Palawan or Bohol you will need to get cash beforehand.
  3. Keep carrying cash to terminal. We were hit for terminal fees at each port and airport we left. These can be small (P25pp at ports) or quite significant (P750pp for international flights out of Cebu). These are paid after check in and cash only.
  4. What? SUP! There is a huge amount of great adventure opportunities here.. in our brief stay we’ve been snorkeling, kayaking, SUP boarding (day and night time) and zip lining (and we didn’t even go diving! Which is meant to be amazing!). All activities have been very well organised and great for beginners.
  5. GET OUT! The islands are vast, grab a bike or scooter and explore. On Bohol our scooter including petrol cost about $8 for the whole day. The scenery is stunning and roads are pretty easy for getting around.
  6. Cream up! The sun has some serious kick. I got sun burnt doing a 10am SUP ride.
  7. Expect rain. On the islands it rained every day for us, usually in 30 min bursts surrounded by sunshine. Get out in the mornings or just enjoy the fact you might get a bit wet.
